What a joy to have been able to stay here! Tranquil and away from crowds, the Fazenda Barranco Alto was a delight. Comfortable room with lovely, spacious bathroom. Delicious, creative meals, and a staff that was so welcoming and helpful. Daily game drives or boat rides in search of wildlife are the star of the show. It's a bit tough to get here (about a 5 hour drive from Campo Grande, or if money not an object, private plane transfers available as well) but worth the effort. If you want to experience the Pantanal, this is the way to go!

The resort is a vibrant place where guests are treated like family. Meals are at a long, communal table, so be prepared to meet new folks and make new friends. It was fun to compare notes about our adventures each day. Activities vary with the interests of the guests, and the sightings of animals. On the game drives, you rarely cross paths with another vehicle. Stefan, our guide, was absolutely amazing and a wealth of knowledge.

If you don't want to feel like just a number in a crowd, and want to experience the real Pantanal, do not hesitate to book a stay here. 4 nights was just perfect for my son and I. Would I book this again? In a heartbeat!

Once in a lifetime experiences. Today we spent an hour in a boat 30 feet from a jaguar that was napping on the bank of the Rio Nefro, photographing and watching. Great guides. Food is good and facility was excellent. Sightseeing in special vehicles, boating, canoeing and horseback riding.

If you are wondering about booking this lodge, you should absolutely go for it. I’ve been to many extraordinary places, but this was one of the very best.

The car journey to the lodge from Campo Grande is not to be missed - it was a mini-adventure in its own right. I would say do car one way and plane the other, if you can - both experiences are very different and each fabulous in their own way.

The welcome from Claudia was like coming home. The rooms and common areas are lovely. My son was overjoyed to find cute frogs in the bathroom. Everything is so clean. The tours are all organised for you and the guides are incredible - we had so much fun - their knowledge and passion for the Pantanal is contagious. It feels a very safe environment for children - everybody took such great care of our son and made sure he had a good time. There is nothing to be worried about here. He was taken to milk and feed the cows every day and he enjoyed it so much.

The food is first class and there are endless cold drinks, water and beer supplied, always.

I can’t imagine any other experience could ever top this. I hope to return some day, I felt like I belonged here. Thank you so much to Camilla, Claudia and the wonderful guides and staff for taking such good care of us - we will never forget it - memories to treasure forever - a little bit of my heart will always be in the Pantanal x

Just returned from two weeks in the Amazon and the Pantanal. Barranco Alto was the best lodge we stayed in during the trip by a wide margin. We were given a warm welcome by the gracious owners Camilla and Claudia. The food that their staff prepared was the best we had on the trip: many choices and all tasty.

One measure of a lodge is the quality of the staff. The two guides we met — Stefan and Murillo —- were excellent. Their knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Pantanal was encyclopedic. They were adept at spotting well camouflaged birds, mammals and reptiles. Sometimes we traveled by a boat powered by a quiet electric motor. Sometimes we were in a Land Cruiser driven by Fabrizio who was as adept at spotting wildlife as he was with the wheel.

Barranco Alto is huge: 11,000 hectares. Most of it is dedicated to conservation, but it is also home to a large cattle ranch. Very early one morning one of the cowboys alerted the lodge to the location of an elusive giant anteater. We rushed to the Land Cruiser which found the animal and parked down wind so that we could get closer without disturbing the giant eater foraging for its breakfast.

That was one of the highlights of the trip along with the conclusion of one of our night rides with the bushes lit up like Christmas decorations by the greenish yellow lights of hundreds of fire flies under a starry sky right out of the Hayden Planetarium.
